Description

The Sespel factory in Cheboksary produced Russia's first road bridge made of high-strength 1565Ch aluminium alloy. This structure combines low weight, strength and durability, outperforming conventional steel alternatives. Aluminium structures suit modern infrastructure projects: their low weight reduces loads on supports and simplifies transport and installation, while natural corrosion resistance ensures a long service life without regular maintenance.

The high-strength aluminium alloys used in Sespel profiles provide reliability comparable to steel while resisting corrosion. Optimised profiles and modern production processes shorten bridge installation times and reduce project and maintenance costs throughout the design service life. Orthotropic decks used in road bridge construction and reconstruction reduce dead loads, lower foundation and support costs, and simplify and accelerate installation. Large prefabricated sections are placed in position in a single lift. The main girder top flange is 30 mm thick, with some girders at 42 mm. Maximum weld length is 15 metres.

Advantages

  • Low weightReduces support and foundation loads by 30–40% compared with steel
  • Long service lifeWithout the periodic maintenance normally required by steel bridges
  • Corrosion resistanceNo anti-corrosion treatment required
  • Fast installationLarge-block assembly with single-lift placement
  • Maintenance savingsMinimal operating costs
  • Environmental performanceAluminium is 100% recyclable
  • Compatibility with innovationPotential integration with magnetic levitation transport, developed with NIIEFA

Applications

  • Road bridges: construction and reconstruction in urban and rural infrastructure; low weight and stability suit seismic regions
  • Railway overpasses: reduced loads on supports and tracks
  • Pedestrian bridges: attractive, lightweight structures for parks, waterfronts and recreation areas
  • Special projects: magnetic levitation transport platforms in cooperation with NIIEFA
