At the expert session “New Trends in Welding Technologies: International Experience and Opportunities for the Russian Market”, Sespel presented industrial applications of friction stir welding.

On 8 October, the leading annual international exhibition of welding materials, equipment and technologies hosted the key events of its business programme. The event brought together welding equipment manufacturers, research institutes, industrial companies and industry associations interested in developing welding technologies in Russia and introducing them into industrial production.

At the expert session “New Trends in Welding Technologies: International Experience and Opportunities for the Russian Market”, Sespel presented industrial applications of friction stir welding (FSW). The presentation covered key applications including semitrailer and tank container manufacturing, railway vehicle production and bridge construction.

Friction stir welding is an innovative metal joining method in which a specially shaped rotating tool is inserted between the edges to be joined. As it travels along the joint, it heats and stirs the material without melting it. The technology produces defect-free, high-strength welds, eliminates distortion and internal stresses, requires no filler materials or shielding gases, and meets demanding environmental requirements.

Sespel is one of the few Russian manufacturers to have mastered FSW on an industrial scale. The company not only uses the technology in its own production, but also designs, manufactures and supplies FSW systems to other Russian enterprises, including those in the aerospace, shipbuilding, transport and energy industries.

The session placed particular emphasis on demonstrating the FSW equipment used at Sespel, as well as equipment manufactured and supplied to other Russian enterprises. Participants discussed opportunities to expand the technology's applications, its role in achieving national technological independence and its potential for further automation of welding processes.

Sespel's presentation attracted interest from industry professionals and demonstrated that Russian welding technology developments can compete with international solutions in both technical performance and production readiness.
