Electromechanical welding head with two continuously controlled axes on a Sespel FSW machine

The electromechanical head’s spindle has two continuously controlled axes, giving Sespel’s FSW system distinctive functionality and extensive flexibility when processing complex geometries.
This design enables five-axis welding and precise tool positioning at the joint, even on unusually shaped parts. The spindle tilts through a maximum angle of 65 degrees, extending access to difficult welding areas.
Technical specifications:- Control type: CNC with a digital interface
- Number of axes: 5 (main axes plus 2 additional controlled axes)
- Maximum tilt angle: 65°
- Spindle stroke: 20 mm
- Maximum welding force: 10 tonnes
- Electric drive power: 45 kW
- Positioning accuracy: ±0.05 mm
- Rotation speed: 100–2,000 rpm, continuously adjustable
The spindle has a linear stroke of up to 20 mm and develops a force of up to 10 tonnes. This maintains consistent tool pressure on the joint edges, ensuring high-quality, defect-free welds.
Despite its productivity and precision, the equipment remains energy-efficient, with a motor rated at just 45 kW. This makes Sespel’s FSW system an economical solution for businesses prioritising quality and efficient resource use.
These specifications make Sespel’s system a versatile tool for automated friction stir welding in mechanical engineering, energy, the chemical industry and other sectors.
