Semi-trailer axle assembly: construction and operation

A semi-trailer axle assembly transfers vehicle weight to the road, allows wheels to rotate, carries longitudinal and lateral loads, and interacts with the braking and suspension systems. Its service life depends on all components working together.

Main axle assembly components

  • axle beam and spindles;
  • hub assemblies and bearings;
  • brake mechanisms;
  • brackets and suspension mountings;
  • trailing arms, air springs and dampers in air suspension systems;
  • sensors and braking system components, depending on configuration.

Loads carried by the axle

Vertical load from semi-trailer weight is only part of the design picture. Braking generates longitudinal forces, cornering creates lateral forces, and road irregularities cause dynamic peaks.

Exceeding the permitted load therefore affects not only tyres, but also the beam, hubs, suspension and frame components.

Overload assessment must distinguish static weighing loads from dynamic forces in motion. Road irregularities, braking and cornering generate brief peaks carried by the axle beam, arms, hubs and mountings.

The role of the hub assembly

The hub allows the wheel to rotate around the spindle. Bearing, seal and lubrication condition affects temperature, rolling resistance and service life.

Maintenance checks play, noise, temperature, seals and fasteners according to the manufacturer’s schedule.

Interaction with the braking system

The brake generates torque transmitted through the wheel to the road. Installation geometry, friction surface condition and correct actuation affect braking stability.

Replacement components must preserve the manufacturer’s specified configuration and compatibility, rather than merely matching in appearance.

Why an axle needs suspension

Suspension connects the axle to the frame and distributes dynamic loads. In an air system, the air spring provides elasticity while the damper suppresses oscillations.

Correct ride height and arm geometry are important for distributing load evenly between the axles of an axle group.

What GOST 33987-2016 governs

GOST 33987-2016 sets requirements for wheeled vehicle masses and dimensions and methods for determining them. For an axle assembly, an important distinction is between the rated load of the axle component and the vehicle’s legally permitted axle load.

Even if a component has a higher rated capacity, vehicle operation must remain within regulatory mass and load distribution limits. Actual distribution depends on cargo centre of gravity, axle spacing, kingpin position and suspension operation.

The standard also defines air suspension: at least 75% of its spring effect must come from pneumatic spring elements. This matters for classification but is not a repair or adjustment instruction for a specific axle assembly.

Sespel’s industrial experience

Sespel axle assemblies are used on its tank, tipping and flatbed semi-trailers. The axle specification highlights robotic welding and a hub bearing with a stated service interval of up to one million kilometres without grease replacement.

For customers, the components must work correctly as an assembly: axle, hubs, brakes and suspension must match the loads and operating conditions of the specific semi-trailer.

Maintenance checks

The specific axle manufacturer sets its maintenance schedule. GOST 33987 defines vehicle mass and dimension requirements but does not replace manufacturer service documentation.

  • beam and mounting condition;
  • hub play and condition;
  • brake component wear;
  • air spring, damper and arm condition;
  • pneumatic line leak-tightness;
  • tyre wear uniformity as a diagnostic indicator.
Important. The axle assembly is part of the running gear and braking system. Design and configuration changes must comply with manufacturer documentation and vehicle safety requirements.
